Amazon’s Alexa May Be the Key to Vegan Dunkin’ Donuts

Amazon’s Alexa May Be the Key to Vegan Dunkin’ Donuts

In late August, Dunkin’ Donuts added voice-enabled mobile ordering through Alexa, Amazon’s digital assistant. The new feature allows members of the Dunkin’ DD Perks Rewards program to order food and drinks through Alexa-powered devices, meaning that one could theoretically order donuts without even having to open a delivery app.

The caveat, though, is that despite the growing demand for vegan food across the nation, Dunkin’ Donuts is still severely lacking in the plant-based department. In order to amend that, nonprofit animal protection agency Compassion Over Killing is asking donut fans across the nation to tweet: “Alexa, order vegan donuts from Dunkin’.”

Dunkin’ is in a unique position to make vegan donuts more readily available than perhaps any other donut chain in the country. The main donut competitor, Krispy Kreme, has just over 1,000 shops in operation while Dunkin’ has over 10,000 in the U.S. and more than 12,600 worldwide. Otherwise, those looking for vegan donuts are left to make ones of their own or seek out the closest independent shop that offers plant-based options.

What if starting tomorrow you could find Dun-Well Doughnuts in a few more places? @thebeannyc #dunwelldoughnuts

Last July, Dunkin’ Donuts CEO David Hoffman revealed his plans to make some menu tweaks, announcing that the chain may soon offer more plant-based drinks – so for the time being, it seems like vegan Dukin’ Donuts aren’t in the cards. But if the chain realizes just how badly its customers want vegan donuts, it could be a lucrative decision to give the people what they want.

In the U.S., vegan donuts aren’t impossible to find. Voodoo Donuts, which has several locations, offers vegan options. And the gluten-free and vegan shop Erin McKenna’s Bakery also offers allergen-friendly plant-based donuts daily.

There are also several smaller shops that offer vegan donuts. Los Angeles’s Donut Friend is well-known for its creative vegan options, as is NYC’s Cinnamon Snail, which has two locations in the city. Award-winning vegan doughnut shop Dun-Well Doughnut has two shops in operation and its donuts are available at select Whole Foods Market locations as well as in the coffee chain The Bean. California-based organic vegan donut shop Donut Farm, has four shops and is carried in 70 cafes and stores throughout the state. In the UK, London residents also fare well. Last August, Crosstown Doughnuts opened its third vegan location. Altogether, the chain has 13 shops and kiosks throughout the city.
