All of Asda’s George Handbags Are Now Made With Vegan Leather

All of George at Asda’s handbags are now made with vegan materials.

The newly animal-free collection includes a wide range of styles. These include a faux leather Mock Croc Kettle Bag, a Snake Print Cross Body Bag, and a Natural Rope Weave Shopper Tote Bag.

“As a team, we’re delighted to be in a position to offer our customers a range of stylish vegan bags, whilst still being able to offer the same great value as the rest of our products,” Helena Boal, Buying Manager for Accessories at George, said in a statement.

“We understand there is an increased demand for vegan options in the fashion marketplace,” she added. “It’s great we can provide such a stylish selection for our shopper to choose from.”

Jas Kaur—George at Asda’s technical manager for accessories—said that turning the range vegan was an eye-opening experience for the team.

She wrote in a post on Asda’s website: “I’m vegetarian, but until I started working on the range I had no idea about the kind of things that went into non-vegan bags.”

“Not just leather, but ingredients on things like glues and dyes,” she added. “Even the coating on a metal clasp can be non-vegan.”

Fashion Brands Opt For Vegan Materials

A number of fashion brands have turned to vegan materials to meet the growing demand. Roger Federer recently teamed up with Swiss running brand On to produce a vegan leather tennis-inspired shoe. Luxury label Balenciaga also launched new vegan leather sneakers earlier this year.

By 2025, the vegan leather market is predicted to be worth $89.6 billion.

George at Asda registered its vegan range of bags with UK charity The Vegan Society. The company features the nonprofit’s Vegan Trademark on all of the bags.

“It’s great to see George investing in this area which will appeal to a lot of consumers,” Chantelle Adkins, Director of Business Development at The Vegan Society, said in a statement.

“We’re proud to have teamed up with George on this range,” she added. “[We] can assure customers that all these products are free from animal ingredients and have not been tested on animals.”
