BREAKING: Burger King Launches Vegan Nuggets

Burger King is adding vegan nuggets to its meat-free line-up, which already includes two plant-based burgers.

Vegan nuggets are coming to Burger King.

While nuggets are one of the most ordered items on fast-food menus, this is the first time a UK fast food chain has offered a meatless version of the popular side.

The new nuggets, served with a vegan Sweet Chilli Dip, join Burger King’s existing plant-based options: the Rebel Whopper burger and the Vegan Royale chicken-style sandwich. Like the latter, the new vegan option is made with plant-based meat by The Vegetarian Butcher.

The new menu items are part of the chain’s mission to make its menu 50 percent meat-free by 2030, which, it claims, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41 percent.

Burger King’s vegan options

Burger King is embracing plant-based options around the globe. In Singapore, the chain recently debuted the Plant Based Whopper, and in the U.S., customers can order the plant-based Impossible Whopper, and in select restaurants, Impossible Nuggets. In France, the chain’s Veggie King burger is now a permanent menu item.

In October, Burger King Spain took things one step further, and opened a totally vegetarian restaurant in Madrid. The entirely meat-free location, dubbed “Vurger King,” was open for a limited time, and offered all of the chain’s veggie options, including vegan nuggets.

According to Borja Hernández de Alba—general director of restaurant brands in Iberia, Spain, and Portugal—Burger King was aiming to ”reach both people who base their diet on vegetable products and those who do eat meat but want to reduce their consumption.”

Vegan fast food

This January, as many sign up for Veganuary—an initiative that supports people to ditch animal products for the month of January—a number of restaurant chains in the UK have launched new vegan options.

Subway has launched two new vegan sandwiches in select locations: the T.L.C. (Tastes Like Chicken) Tikka, and the T.L.S. (Tastes Like Steak). Domino’s is adding vegan pepperoni to the menu, while Starbucks has debuted the Tu’NAH Sandwich, made with The Vegetarian Butcher’s vegan tuna.
