Cruelty-Free Beauty on a Budget: Top 10 Under $20

Vegan and cruelty-free beauty products are becoming increasingly more accessible—and popular. And the great news is, you don’t have to break the bank for the sake of a good beat face. There are a number of cruelty-free cosmetics brands—many of which are vegan or carry vegan products—that allow you to serve some major looks on a budget.

But what makes makeup cruelty-free and vegan?

What Makes Beauty Products Vegan and Cruelty-Free?

Some beauty products contain animal-derived ingredients. These include beeswax, honey, carmine (crushed insects), gelatin, squalene (shark liver oil), lanolin (wool grease), fish scales, and allantoin (cow urine)—just to name a few. Yuck.

According to the animal welfare organization Humane Society of the United States, animals like rabbits, mice, and guinea pigs are given tests in order to test the efficacy of cosmetics products. However, in the U.S., these tests are not required by law.

Skin irritation experiments and force-feeding are just some of the tests that researchers perform on animals to test cosmetics products’ safety and hypoallergenic properties. And at the end of the experiments, the animals are killed.

Thankfully, many regions have already banned animal-tested cosmetics. And a number of beauty brands carry products that have not been tested on animals. (Check out our complete guide to vegan and cruelty-free beauty and skincare brands, and by some of your favorite celebs.)
