Detroit’s first vegan ‘coney island’, named Chili Mustard Onions, is set to open as soon as April. The family-owned business has committed to providing a creative, plant-based menu to engage in the growing “vegan revolution”.

Chef Pete LaCombe reveals to the Metro Times that the venue will offer all of the traditional favourites, as well as some exciting new additions. The menu will include chilli cheese fries, soft serve ice cream, gyros, pies, doughnuts, burgers, and of course, hot dogs.

Also on offer will be a vegan version of the well-loved Big Mac. Diners opting for the burger, aptly named the Big Mock, will enjoy two meat-less beef patties, cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions and a special sauce. Craft beers, wines and cocktails will also be available.

LaCombe reveals he is also open to experimenting with new menu items, telling the Metro Times, “If they want it, then I will create it”.

Chili Mustard Onions has vowed to use many organic and non-GMO products, as well as utilising a reverse-osmosis water system for cooking. Guests can expect a “fun, inviting atmosphere with music, a rock ‘n’ roll vibe, and absolutely amazing unique food that won’t leave you feeling hungry and broke when you leave”.

In regards to the new business venture, LaCombe explains: “I feel like it will truly reflect who I am as a person and vegan chef.” 

“I want to make a difference and change world with food – vegan food.”

Chili Mustard Onions is set to open on the 1st of April in Brush Park.
