A vegan version of Greggs’ fan-favorite Sausage, Bean, and Cheese Melt is coming.

According to the ubiquitous British bakery chain, the Vegan Sausage, Bean, and CheeZe Melt will launch nationwide early next month. It features “delectable” vegan sausage, a combination of original and mozzarella flavor vegan cheeZe, and baked beans.

“The latest addition to our menu gives customers another vegan-friendly alternative to one of our most iconic menu items,” said Greggs customer director Hannah Squirrell.

The new sausage and bean melt will be Greggs’ third plant-based pastry following the Steak Bake and the ever-popular Vegan Sausage Roll, both of which prompted lengthy queues from eager customers and sold out almost immediately.

“As we expand our vegan options with the launch of our new Vegan Sausage, Bean, and CheeZe Melt, we mark another milestone as we continue with our journey to become our customers’ favorite destination for food-on-the-go,” added Squirrell.

Vegan glazed ring donuts, iced buns, mince pies, baguettes, wraps, wedges, and soup are also featured on Greggs’ menu. Even CEO Roger Whiteside announced that he had adopted a plant-based diet back in 2019. He made the decision after watching the 2018 documentary The Game Changers.

Will Greggs Remake All Its Top Sellers?

Whiteside has previously hinted that the bakery chain is looking at producing vegan versions of all its top-selling items; providing chefs can make something that tastes “just as good” as the original.

Some of Greggs’ products are currently also available at frozen food-focused supermarket chain Iceland, including the popular Vegan Steak Bake.

Greggs is not the only high street chain catering to increased British demand for vegan options and ingredients, with cafes and coffee shops such as Pret A Manger, EAT, Costa, and West Cornwall Pasty Co. also leaning into the expanding plant-based market. According to Mintel, UK meat-free food sales are expected to reach over £1.1 billion by 2024.

Greggs Vegan Sausage, Bean, and CheeZe Melt will launch to more than 2,000 stores across the UK on August 5. The new item costs £1.60 per item.
