Meat-Loving Guy Fieri Adds Vegan Burger to Carnival Cruise Line Menu

Guy’s Burger Shop, a Carnival cruise line restaurant that was opened in partnership with Emmy Award-winning Food Network star and restaurateur, Guy Fieri, has added a vegan black bean burger to the menu.

According to cruise-focused website Cruise Radio, the new vegan menu item was revealed via Facebook by Carnival brand ambassador John Heald. The plant-based burgers are made from whole and mashed black beans, brown rice, roasted pumpkin, cauliflower, and mushrooms, tofu, onion, and savory spices. Carnival also includes instructions for making the burger, courtesy of the culinary team, for customers who are interested in making their own at home. The process involves cooking the black beans from scratch, marinating pumpkin in spices, and then mashing all ingredients together and grilling the hand-formed patties until they crisp.

The new vegan burger isn’t the first meatless patty to grace the menu of Guy’s Burger Joint, but it is the first to be entirely plant-based. According to Cruise Hive, the award-winning establishment offers a vegetarian burger for those looking to avoid meat.

Fieri is possibly best-known for hosting the hit Food Network television series “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” where he travels across the country to visit humble, family-owned eateries and tuck into, more often than not, dishes centered around meat and cheese. However, the star isn’t opposed to trying vegan. In 2016, the Minneapolis-based meat-free butcher, The Herbivorous Butcher, was featured on the show.

Last April, the “Guy’s Grocery Games” host served a vegan menu at the Stagecoach California Country Music Festival at a pop-up called Fieri’s Stagecoach Smokehouse. The menu offered a plant-based Thai Curry Burrito.

The popular TV personality has also previously said that he will one day write a vegetarian cookbook. “I always tell my family—and they laugh about it—but someday I will write a vegetarian book,” he told PEOPLE at the Carnival Summertime Beer-B-Que, which took place in NYC two years ago. “My cousin, who’s a big vegetarian, tells me flat out, ‘You’re my favorite vegetarian chef.’”

“At first, people think about vegetarian food like, ‘Here’s some veggies. Here’s some pasta.’ But there’s so much more you can do in the vegetarian and vegan world,” he continued.

The new vegan burger can be found at Guy’s Burger Joint on 17 Carnival cruise ships. The restaurant is also featured  at more than 18 Live Nation, the world’s largest entertainment company, venues.
