Slim’s Pork Chop Express, aka one of Liverpool’s meatiest restaurants, has added vegan options to its menu.
Across the UK, more and more consumers are opting to ditch meat – at least one or twice a week – for environmental, health, and animal welfare-related reasons.
Slim Pork Chop Express wants to ensure it is catering to these kinds of consumers, as well as its normal customer base, according to Matt Farrell the co-founder of Graffiti Spirits Group. The restaurant group owns Slim’s Pork Chop Express as well as two more Liverpool-based restaurants, Santa Chupitos and El Bandito.
“We want to encourage a relaxed, inclusive environment for all of our guests,” Farrell told the Liverpool Echo. “All out items are served on trays and come in the middle of the table to promote a social dining experience for everybody. Making sure our meat-free mates could enjoy the food and atmosphere had to be next on our agenda.”
He continued, “We’re really pleased with the finished result of our menu and can’t wait to hear the feedback.” Slim Pork Chop Express’ veganizable menu items include the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Burger, the Lo Pan Fries, the Tofu Bites, and the Grilled Corn.
According to one survey conducted earlier this year, over half of all Brits are keen to follow a vegetarian, vegan, or flexitarian lifestyle. For 18 to 24-year-olds, the figure is even higher, with two in three stating they would like to eliminate or reduce their meat intake. In fact, UK Generation Z-ers are so fixed on a meat-free future that 20 percent believe that the planet could be entirely meatless by 2030.
Liverpool’s Growing Vegan Scene
Liverpool – the home of the Beatles, including the groups’ former vocalist and bass guitarist, vegetarian activist Paul McCartney – is becoming increasingly vegan-friendly.
Liverpool is also home to some of the best vegan fried chicken in the UK. Earlier this year, the Caledonia pub on Catharine Street received a framed award from animal rights organization PETA for its plant-based chicken which “delivers huge flavour with zero cruelty.”
