Kat has been writing about veganism, environment, and sustainability for five years. Their interests include over-analyzing the various socioeconomic forms of oppression, how that overlaps with veganism, and how the media in all of its forms reflects the current culture.

(Updated May 22, 2020) Lizzo is dining on spicy vegan food while in quarantine.

The three-time Grammy Award-winning musician has shared her plant-based recipes on TikTok.

In April, she filmed herself making a spicy vegan chicken sandwich. She captioned the post with: “Vegan spicy Mcchicken idgaf that [censored] was hittin hoooooo.”

The meal consisted of oven-baked plant-based chicken fillets made with Frank’s RedHot Seasoning Blend and garlic powder on toasted buns with egg-free mayonnaise—paired with waffle fries.

Lizzo recently posted another TikTok video of a “vegan Jamaican spicy beef patty.”

She filmed herself using plant-based meat by MorningStar Farms, dairy-free cream cheese by Tofutti, and of course, Frank’s RedHot Seasoning Blend, to make the recipe.

Lizzo on Minneapolis’s Vegan Food Scene

Though not vegan, the “Juice” singer is not new to vegan food. In a 2017 interview with the blog Nasty Galaxy, she reflected on Minneapolis’s meat-free food scene and her former vegetarianism.

“Minneapolis has really, really real good vegetarian and vegan food options,” Lizzo said. She added that she followed a vegetarian diet for seven years and a plant-based diet for one.

She added:I found places that were really creative with how they made vegan food and it wasn’t just fluff, just tofu, just seitan. It was like, finding ways to make vegetable-based proteins.”

In a February 2019 interview with The Cut, Lizzo spoke about her time as a struggling musician while playing flute for the progressive rock band Ellypseas. With no home of her own at the time, the artist slept in her band’s rehearsal space.

Her friends also helped her out with food.

“I would drive around to my friends’ houses, and if they were having dinner, I’d be like, ‘Hey, come hang out! You got some food? Let’s kick it!’ And just eat the chicken and rice. Actually, I was a vegetarian. So I would eat the chicken-juice-soaked rice,” she said. She has not discussed her transition away from vegetarianism.

The genre-bending artist is influenced by a number of musicians, including the late Prince, who followed a vegetarian diet. She worked with the seven-time Grammy Award-winner on his 2014 song “BoyTrouble.”

Lizzo told music television channel Fuse: “Working with Prince was one of those surreal things that I’ll never actually get over. Especially now that he’s gone. It’s kind of immortalized as a fable, you know what I’m saying?”
