Internationally renowned ice cream brand Magnum is launching its pea protein-based vegan ice cream in New Zealand. The two new flavours, Magnum Vegan Classic and Magnum Vegan Almond, are already available throughout Europe and in UK stores including Tesco. The dairy-free ice cream will also launch in Australia later this month.

The Vegan Society of Aotearoa, New Zealand announced the arrival on Instagram. Its official!! MAGNUM Dairy Free will be available in NZ from Monday, 18 Feb. Get them @ Pak ‘N Save, New World, Countdown & most convenience stores,” the organisation wrote.

The news shortly follows the announcement that the brand would launch in Australia. A leaked poster described the treat as a “game changer” as well as “the first indulgent dairy free impulse product in Australia.”

In addition to“tak[ing] pride in the art of fine ice cream,” Magnum is becoming increasingly conscious of its sustainability. To create its Magnum Dark Intense ice cream, the company uses 70 percent cocoa sourced from sustainably-grown Rainforest Alliance cocoa beans.

The Future of Ice Cream Is Vegan

Given both the influence and size of the Magnum brand – its dairy products are a firm favourite, rated the number one best-selling ice cream on the planet – the company’s foray into vegan ice cream may be monumental.

While Magnum’s first vegan products are, at this time, known only to be available in Australia, the UK, and select European locations like Finland and Sweden, there is hope that the brand will expand its dairy-free options elsewhere. Competitor Ben & Jerry’s launched its vegan options in stores across the U.S and Asia as well as Australia and the UK.

In the UK especially, the vegan ice cream industry is booming. One dairy-free ice cream van, run by animal rights organization Viva!, recently struggled to keep up with demand whilst it journeyed across Britain. The van was part of an (evidently popular) campaign to show the British public how delicious non-dairy ice cream is, while also raising awareness of the inherent cruelty of the dairy industry.

Magnum will launch in nationwide in Australia on January 28 and in New Zealand on February 18.
