Cosmetics Giant MAC Replaces Animal Hair in Makeup Brushes With Vegan Bristles

Make-up fanatics rejoice – MAC has officially ditched animal hair from its cosmetic brushes for 100% synthetic fibers.

Until now, MAC has been distinctly animal-heavy. From animal testing, using animal ingredients in cosmetic formulas, and animal hair in its brushes, many conscious consumers and vegans avoid purchasing from the giant cosmetic company.

“Our long-lauded brush line gets treated to a makeover!” MAC wrote in a statement. “Introducing our 100% synthetic brushes, incorporating the latest innovations in fibre technology for superior performance and improved longevity.”

All of the new synthetic brushes will have an ‘S’ printed on them after the brush number to allow consumers to distinguish between the two types. Synthetic brushes are renowned for not only being animal-free but also for absorbing less product upon application and being the optimal material to use with cream makeup.

MAC’s Global Senior Artist Dominic Skinner explained the company’s choice in an Instagram post, even shutting down skepticism about quality before there was room for debate. “So MAC makeup brushes are becoming 100% synthetic with all current MAC brushes converting to man made fibre and new brushes being added to the line up. I promise I was very doubtful over them as I love my current MAC brushes, but I have been converted too. They are just as soft and in many cases, softer. The best thing I’ve found is the new makeup brushes keep their shape better. Fear not! The quality is still the same if not better!!”

The brushes are in the same size and shape that makeup-users love. Included in this new collection of synthetic brushes are the 125, 161 and 139. MAC has also released two new brushes for eye makeup – 240S and 268S. Additionally, the price of synthetic brushes and animal-sourced brushes is the same, enabling customers to make an ethical choice that won’t empty their wallet. These brushes are already available at MAC stores and certified MAC retailers.

If people can combine their love for makeup with a choice to be kind to animals, this may only be the start of MAC’s future in the vegan marketplace.
