With the rise of luxury – often pricey – plant-based products, many veg-curious people are often deterred from veganism for fear that it’s simply too expensive. However, in a bid to quash this misconception, vegan celebrity Moby has shown just how cheap plant-based eating can be.

Taking to Instagram, the musician and restauranteur shared one of his all-time favorite vegan meals – which costs only 75 cents.

“When I became a vegan in 1987 I was making $2,000 a year and living in an abandoned factory. So I had to learn how to eat really, really inexpensively,” the now-affluent star wrote.

Sharing an image of a green, tofu broth, he continued, “One of my favorites then, and now, is this: home made broth with garlic, ginger, onions, cabbage, spinach, miso. Udon noodles. And firm tofu with scallions (to be honest, tofu was a big indulgence in 1987).” He added, “Done right it’s delicious and costs around .75 cents per serving.”

Dispelling the myth that veganism is an expensive, even elitist, lifestyle is simply the latest on the long list of Moby’s efforts to promote plant-based living.

Recently, the musician decided to sell his New York midcentury modern home and donate a portion of the proceeds to his animal rights foundation. Before this, he announced the sale of some of his musical equipment and his own personal record collection; the profits of which were donated to the plant-based medical organization, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Back in February, Moby announced that all profits from his latest album and live shows would be donated to animal rights organizations. He wrote on Instagram, “animal rights are more important to me than any small, selfish concerns I might have.”

Further, in June, Moby, who recently claimed that vegan primatologist Jane Goodall was “the most perfect woman on the planet,” gave his first ever TEDx talk. In the talk, titled “Why I’m a Vegan,”  the musician said, “Every animal, no matter how big or how small or how wild or how domesticated, wants to be alive and simply wants to be happy.”
