New York Proposes to Ban the Sale and Import of Animal Tested Cosmetics

Cruelty Free International (CFI) has recently posted about their support of and progress with the New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act — an act which, if passed, would ban the import and sale of animal-tested cosmetics. As a central hub for fashion and cultural inspiration, not only across America but all over the world, New York City has immense power (and responsibility) to influence great change in the beauty industry.

If the bill is passed, it would make New York the first state to pass such a law. However, there’s still more work to be done before that happens. CFI explains, ‘Cruelty Free International has been working hard behind the scenes to support this bill since 2016. The bill which was re-introduced last year would see New York join the European Union, Norway, Israel, and India in prohibiting the sale of new animal tested cosmetics.’

This is not the first time New York has stood up for animals. Back in 2008,  the state passed a law requiring companies to use alternatives to animal testing validated by Interagency Coordination Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM).

CFI’s North America Campaign Manager, Monica Engebretson, sang the praises of the New York officials who have supported the bill thus far. ‘We applaud Assembly member Rosenthal for championing this ground-breaking legislation that would make New York a cruelty free cosmetics zone. It sets an example for the rest of the United States to catch up with the global demand for safe and humane cosmetics.’

The bill currently needs to be passed by a committee before it can reach a floor vote. For updates on the bill’s progress, please follow CFI.
