Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales is staying healthy by eating vegetarian food, according to the Daily Express.

The 70-year-old prince — the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history — visited Barbados earlier this week, inspiring the media to draw comparisons to when he was a “young eligible bachelor,” the Daily Express wrote.

He and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, took a stroll on the beach. Prince Charles wore a pair of floral swimming shorts, making the paparazzi photographs “strikingly similar” to ones taken on Australia’s Bondi Beach in 1981.

Onlookers noted the prince’s “youthful figure.” One told the Mirror, “Charles looked absolutely incredible. He has a physique of a very fit man less than half his age. He is testament to living a healthy and actively lifestyle.”

The prince keeps his trim figure by following a military fitness plan and eating well, the Daily Express said. “Charles is passionate about organic food and he even has some meat-free days,” the tabloid newspaper wrote.

The Royal Family and Veganism

In 2017, Prince Charles launched an initiative to evolve the food system. It aimed to bring long-forgotten, plant-based foods back in a bid to help farmers move away from unsustainable monocultures. The campaign would also help feed the world’s growing population.

Last year, during a trip to Greece, activists encouraged the prince to give up animal products. “Charles, go vegan! Compassion looks great on you,” read a banner hanging from a building. Two months later, during a visit to Wales’ first zero waste organic food shop, the Prince of Wales turned down chocolate to sample organic cannellini beans and vegan Sunshine Lemon and Pea soup, which he declared “seriously good.”

Prince Charles isn’t the only member of the royal family dipping his toes into the plant-based movement.

The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has been vocal about animal welfare issues. She publicly encouraged fashion brand Burberry to ditch fur (which it later did) and urged her husband, Prince Harry, to abstain from his family’s annual bird hunt, and in 2017, from their traditional Boxing Day hunt.

The pair’s wedding supported environmental conservation; they donated money to seven charities including two environmental nonprofits, Surfers Against Sewage and The Wilderness Foundation UK. Prince Harry and Markle’s wedding album featured vegan cheese and in honor of the couple’s wedding, PETA India rescued a pit bull in their honor.

Additionally, both Prince Harry and Prince William have spoken about the importance of implementing proactive measures to save the planet from climate change.
