Serena Williams’ Backed Vegan Frozen Food Company Secures $43 Million Funding

Vegan meal delivery company Daily Harvest, backed by several celebrities including Serena Williams, has raised $43 million in a Series B round of funding.

Daily Harvest is a female-led subscription service based in New York, founded by Rachel Drori. The company specializes in healthy and nutritious frozen foods, because sometimes life is just too busy to prepare all your meals from fresh.

On the quest to prove that frozen doesn’t always equal less healthy, Daily Harvest have won over investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and VMG Partners. They have also gained celebrity support from actor Haylie Duff, athlete Shaun White and popular chef Bobby Flay who join existing investors Serena Williams and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The vice president of VMG Parners, Carle Stenmark stated, ‘Daily Harvest is building a platform that is changing the reputation of frozen by delivering highly nutritious, extremely healthy food and beverage options in a convenient and portable manner’.

‘Rachel and the amazing team at Daily Harvest have leveraged their unique business model to quickly adapt to consumers’ lifestyles and preferences, meeting needs and delivering consumer experiences that traditional frozen CPG businesses cannot.’

The company harvest and freeze their produce at peak ripeness, the result being that all the nutrients that would normally degrade over time are held within the food. Blueberries for example have 200% more vitamin C when frozen after 3 days than when fresh.

All the recipes for the dishes supplied by Daily Harvest have been co-developed by a Michelin trained chef and nutritionist, so you can be sure they are of excellent quality.

Rachel Drori said of the investment, ‘we’re thrilled about Lightspeed and VMG coming onboard to help scale our business.Their combined expertise in the technology and consumer sectors will help us realize our mission of making functional, nutrient-dense food accessible and convenient, ultimately contributing to the democratization of wellness.’
