Ireland-based vegan and vegetarian food company the Happy Pear will soon open a café in Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport.

The eatery, which will be the company’s fourth café, is opening in collaboration with highway and airport food-service company HMSHost.

It will serve meat-free healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes, including vegan options. Cakes, sandwiches, salads, and soups will be available, along with hand-roasted coffee.

“Dublin Airport is continually working to improve the passenger experience and the new Happy Pear outlet will be a great addition for our customers,” Dublin Airport’s managing director Vincent Harrison said in a statement. “We are particularly delighted to welcome a new Irish food brand to the airport.”

The Happy Pear Is a ‘Culinary Utopia’

Twins Stephen and David Flynn founded the Happy Pear in 2004. The company produces dishes like plant-based granola, carrot and butternut squash soup, chilli no carne, shepherdless pie, chickpea curry, and vegan salted caramel bites. The Happy Pear uses natural ingredients and no artificial preservatives, colors, or flavorings to make its food.

Speaking about their upcoming airport café, the Flynn brothers said in a joint statement that the new location is an “amazing opportunity” to “encourage people to eat more fruit and veg and to make eating healthier, easier, and more accessible while on the move.”

One of the Happy Pear’s existing cafés has attracted the attention of vegan actor Russell Brand. Brand visited a Happy Pear eatery in Greystones, Wicklow, last year. The entertainer — who stopped eating meat at 14 for animal welfare reasons — named the café a “culinary utopia full of beautiful people.”

The Happy Pear and the Environment

Dublin Airport’s Harrison also said in his statement, “The Happy Pear brand is synonymous not just with healthy, freshly prepared food options, but also with sustainable business practices, something Dublin Airport strongly supports.”

As well as a focus on sustainable plant-based food, the Happy Pear café will use fully compostable takeaway containers, cups, straws, and cutlery. In a bid to combat waste, customers who use a reusable cup will receive a 20 percent discount on hot drinks.

The company’s cafés donate leftover food to local charities through food redistribution charity FoodCloud. The Happy Pear also gives its coffee grinds to local gardeners.

The team’s vans run on compressed natural gas in an effort to limit vehicle CO² emissions and its production facilities and offices are fitted with LED lights.

The Happy Pear’s new café will be located after security screening in Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport.
