Topshop Launches Cruelty-Free Designer-Quality Faux Fur Coats

British multinational fashion retailer Topshop has released a vegan-friendly, faux fur coat that could pass as designer.

On its website, Topshop introduces the mid-length coat as “the fashion favourite velvet faux fur coat.” Designed with “ultra-soft” fabric and made from 100 percent polyester, the retailer promises that the vegan-friendly coat will “be your new favourite outerwear piece.”

The coat may appeal to consumers not simply for its cruelty-free materials, but also because it bears an undeniable resemblance to another faux-fur coat by luxury American label Tibi. The brand is popular among celebrities such as lawyer Amal Clooney and entrepreneur Olivia Palermo.

While both coats offer a plush texture and feel, robe-style belt, and smooth chocolate shade, the price tags are significantly different. Topshop’s design retails for £85, in line with high street prices, whereas the Tibi coat sells for $695 USD.

The coat isn’t the only faux fur piece offered by Topshop this season; the brand is currently selling a plethora of cruelty-free clothes and accessories, including a leopard print faux fur coat, a generic animal print faux fur jacket, fluffy faux fur hoodies, and even faux fur hats and bags.

THE RISE OF FUR-FREE FASHION

No longer seen as a subordinate, cheaper alternative to the real thing, many fashion labels and fur aficionados are embracing faux.

Last month, London Fashion Week went completely fur-free, the first major fashion week to do so. Since then, luxury label Coach has agreed to phase out mink, coyote, fox, and rabbit fur, joining other major fur-free brands which now include BurberryJohn GallianoDKNY, and Diane von Furstenberg.

Faux is so in-style that it was lauded this summer by Vogue Australia, and even celebrities are backing it. Vegan actor and model Pamela Anderson recently helped Kim Kardashian and the First Lady of the U.S., Melania Trump, swap fur for cruelty-free alternatives. Other celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Amy Adams, and Priyanka Chopra are also fans of the faux fur created by 20-year-old designer Maya Reik. Reality TV stars from “Love Island,” Samira Mighty, Laura Anderson, and Laura Crane, have even urged the UK Parliment to make Britain fur-free.
