Urban Decay is launching an exclusive limited-edition cosmetics capsule inspired by Prince, and many of the products are vegan. Prince, who passed away in 2016, reportedly adhered to a vegetarian (and mostly vegan) diet prior to his death.
The capsule includes two 10-pan eyeshadow palettes with a variety of different hues, an eye pencil in both matte black and matte white, a liquid highlighter, a multitasking makeup brush, and a setting powder.
Additionally, the packaging for the collection boasts the “Purple Rain” singer’s signature violet shade, as well as gold and black designs that are meant to honor the Grammy winner’s “vibrant self-expression,” according to a press release.
As a whole, the collection is designed to “inspire fans and those getting to know Prince to live boldly and without limits.” The entire line is available in the exclusive UD | PRINCE Vault that houses all seven limited-edition products.
The Prince x Urban Decay capsule is slated to be available for pre-order on May 21, and the full collection will go on sale on May 27 at UrbanDecay.com. Individual products will be available starting June 6.
Is the Prince x Urban Decay Makeup Collection Vegan?
An Urban Decay rep confirmed to LIVEKINDLY that the majority of the items in the capsule are vegan—both eyeshadow palettes, the makeup brush, and the setting powder.
The U GOT THE LOOK Eyeshadow Palette includes 10 “super rich, ultra-blendable” shades that go from “pearly cream and sunset gold metallic to deep blue-purple and black glitter.” In contrast, the LET’S GO CRAZY Eyeshadow Palette ranges from creamy iridescent violet to rich purple metallic and deep blue glitter. Each of these 10 dramatic shadows—with matte, pearl, and shimmery chrome finishes—can stand on its own or be combined with another hue.
The vegan All Nighter Waterproof Setting Powder was crafted to “mattify your look” and keep oil and shine to a minimum for up to 11 hours, while the vegan Multitasker Brush is densely packed with super-soft vegan bristles. The versatile makeup tool is designed to be used anywhere on your face or body.
As for the non-vegan products in this collection, the Kajal Eye Pencil is described as a “bold eyeliner inspired by Prince’s smoldering gaze.” It comes in matte black as well as matte white. Lastly, the liquid highlighter infused with shea butter gives skin a “lightweight dewy glow.”
Was Prince Vegan?
Though Prince rarely spoke about his dietary preferences, he reportedly stuck to a meat-free diet, and declared his Paisley Park Estate in Minnesota a meat-free zone.
The singer’s former spouse, Mayte Garcia, has said the couple had vegetarian food at their wedding, and Prince’s former personal chefs, Ray and Juell Roberts, noted that the “Little Red Corvette” crooner liked cheese on his pasta.
Still, even after Prince’s death, Paisley Park has stayed meat-free. In fact, all visitors and staff must eschew meat, and preferably all animal products, during their time on the property.
“Prince was outspoken about animal rights and nutrition and it was not uncommon for these themes to show up in his music as well,” Paisley Park tour operations manager Mitch Maguire told The Daily Meal in June 2018. “Out of respect for Prince and his personal ethos, Paisley Park remains a vegetarian facility for both staff and guests alike.”
Though Prince was often quiet about his activism, he was a strong supporter of animal rights. He attended PETA’s 2005 gala, and was named the organization’s “Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity” the following year.
