English Town Stroud to Host the South West’s First Ever Vegan Beer Oktoberfest

The South West of the UK is set to host its first ever vegan Oktoberfest this year, promising locals a day full of beer, German-inspired weiners, and live music. Held in Stroud, the vegan event is inspired by the original German Oktoberfest, a globally-renowned meat-heavy beer-centric event held annually in Munich.

Founded by a group of creative vegan companies named “The Drunk Punks Collective,” the festival will serve authentic beers from local breweries, including Stroud Brewery and Bristol-based Moor Brewery, plus a multitude of vegan German-style wieners, potato cakes, and classic desserts.

Members of “The Drunk Punks Collective” include Vegan Punks bloggers, Jess and Dan who create “rad” plant-based recipes and reviews, Liam and Tilly from Seitan’s Grill, a “devilish” pop up vegan burger joint, and Daisy, an organiser of the local market Stroud Vegan Fair.

The upcoming event echoes the South West region’s growing interest in veganism. According to Vegan Fairs, the group behind a number of UK vegan events, the success of Frome’s first Vegan Fair and Somerset’s first Vegan Market has inspired more plant-based living events in the South West. For instance, Cotswold Vegan Events is hosting the Cirencester Vegan Fair and the Louth Vegan Fair later this month, as well as the Newbury Vegan Market in October.

Jo Harrington, co-organiser of Vegan Fairs, explained: More and more people are enjoying the benefits that a plant-based diet entails. In [the] South West there is already a wide range of shops, cafes, and restaurants offering delicious plant-based food. Times are changing and we’re very proud to be a part of that change.”

Although the Drunk Punks Collective event is the first vegan Oktoberfest to take place in the South West, it is not the first in the UK. On October 6, “Vegtoberfest” will take place in London, serving vegan craft ales, white wines, and hot and cold cocktails, as well as vegan sausages, pizza, and pretzels.

Stroud’s vegan Oktoberfest event will take place on Saturday 20th October at The Malthouse Bar & Kitchen.
