Vegan Takeout Orders Reach an All-Time High, Says GrubHub

Vegan takeout orders increased 19 percent so far in 2017, says GrubHub, the nation’s leading takeout service platform.

The data show that interest in plant-based and vegan foods are at an all-time high. The Meatless Monday campaign in particular, which encourages people to go meat-free on Mondays for their health and for the planet, is indeed a success, with plant-based proteins showing a strong five percent lead in sales on Mondays over other days of the week. Somewhat surprisingly, the trendy jackfruit is seeing tremendous growth – sales of the fruit that cooks up like pulled pork are up 33 percent on Mondays alone.

“It’s exciting to see more people choosing meatless options on Mondays,” Dana Smith, campaign director of Meatless Monday, said in a statement“By starting the week on a healthy note, we are forging a path that’s good for our well-being.”

The data come from the sales at GrubHub’s more than 75,000 restaurant partners in 1,200 U.S. cities and London.

“With so many vegetarian dishes gaining popularity, it is easy to see that choosing meat-free meals is not just a trend,” said Barbara Martin Coppola, CMO of GrubHub.“GrubHub provides an easy way for people to make the food choices that make them feel healthiest and happiest, at their convenience. For many, this includes ordering plant-based food!”
